汽車的輪胎是用rubber（橡膠）製造。橡膠車胎於1888年正式面世，之後一直用於汽車業，rubber成了車胎的代名詞。說where the rubber meets the road，即是車胎接觸路面之處，是指汽車落地，車胎貼著地面的時候，真正測試到車胎是好是壞，可以證實車胎的實用性。

上世紀九十年代後期，不少美國車胎公司的廣告都用上where the rubber meets the road作為廣告用語，例如：The fact gets down to where the rubber meets the road（車胎著地時才見真章），然後出現where the rubber hits the road，強調橡膠撞擊地面和回彈的影像。

現在這句話已演化為日常用語，衍生出不同形式，包括where/when the rubber meets/hits the road，比喻將理論付諸實踐、真相揭曉或受到考驗需要顯示實力的重要時刻。

理論theory經過研究、思考而來，是一個想法和主張，不一定在現實中的出現，而實踐practice則是實際發生了的，不是單純想像。經常說put theory in/into practice 就是將理論付諸實踐，不再紙上談兵，when theory is put to practice，就是以實踐證明理論或計劃不是空談的時候。
